Stage plot and input list: do you actually need one?
Yes, and it takes fifteen minutes to make one. A stage plot shows the sound engineer where everyone stands and what gear is on stage; an input list tells them what to plug in and how to mix it. Most small acts skip both and then wonder why the line check runs long and the monitors are wrong all night.
What a stage plot actually shows
A stage plot is a top-down diagram of the stage. Draw the stage as a rectangle, audience side at the bottom, and mark:
- Where each musician stands
- Where each amp, drum kit, and keyboard rig sits
- Where each microphone and DI box is
- Where each monitor wedge points and which musician it feeds
- Power drops if you know them (drum riser, keyboard side)
That's it. You don't need to draw amps that look like amps. A labelled box that says "guitar amp, mic'd" does the job. The engineer is scanning this in a few seconds while you're loading in, so label things the way you'd say them out loud, not the way a manual would.
Why the input list matters more
The stage plot tells the engineer where things are. The input list tells them what to do with each one, and that's the document that actually saves time at soundcheck. It's a simple numbered table:

Number the channels in the order you'd want them on the mixer, left to right roughly matching the stage. Note anything unusual: a keyboard that needs stereo, a vocal mic that's a specific model because the singer is picky about it, an acoustic guitar that needs a DI as well as a mic. If someone in the band plays two instruments and needs a channel switch mid-song, say so. This is the piece of paper an engineer actually references while they're patching, and it's the one thing that, if wrong, causes the most visible problems: no monitor, wrong channel muted, a DI that never got turned on.
How to make one without design software
You don't need Illustrator. A stage plot can be:
- Drawn by hand on paper, photographed, saved as a PDF or JPG
- Built in Google Slides or PowerPoint using rectangles and text boxes, then exported as PDF
- Made in a free stage-plot generator (search "stage plot creator"), which gives you drag-and-drop icons for amps, mics, and risers
The input list is just a table. Google Sheets, a Word doc, even a plain text list works — engineers read plenty of hand-typed lists. What matters is that both documents are one page each, in landscape for the stage plot (matches how stages actually look), portrait is fine for the input list. Export both as PDF so they open the same on any phone or laptop, and put your band name and today's date at the top so an engineer flipping through email doesn't have to guess which file is which.
What not to do
Don't send a stage plot with fifteen unlabelled boxes and no input list. It looks organized and tells the engineer nothing they can use. Don't reuse a diagram from a different lineup — if the keyboard player left the band eight months ago, the current file with the keyboard still on it is worse than not sending one, because now the engineer is troubleshooting a channel that doesn't exist. Don't leave off monitor mixes; "give everyone a bit of everything" is not a monitor mix, it's a guess, and guesses are what make soundcheck take forty minutes instead of ten.
Also don't wait until load-in to hand this over. Email it when you confirm the gig, or at latest a few days before. Engineers working multi-band nights are often building the day's patch in advance; if your input list shows up after the fact, you get whatever channel assignment is left over, not the one that makes sense for your set.
The actual payoff
An engineer who gets a clean stage plot and input list in advance can have your channels patched and gain-staged before you finish carrying gear in. That means your line check is a line check, not a discovery process — you get more time on monitors, less time standing around while someone finds a spare DI box. It also means the same engineer remembers you as the band that made their night easier, which matters more than it sounds like at rooms that book repeat acts.
If you're building a press kit anyway, keep the stage plot and input list next to it — venues often ask for the technical details around the same time they ask for your bio, photos, and availability, so having all of it in one place saves a round of emails.
